carl jung believed that nothing was caused by chance. synchronicity is a term he coined to describe his theory that coincidental events that are highly likely to occur, and not causal in nature. essentially, simultaneous occurrences are meaningfully related.
if you were to go abroad, it is very likely that you will run into someone who grew up down the street from you. and it is very likely that one of that person's friends will know one of your friends. and so on and so forth. basically, we are all connected and the world isn't random at all.
